Five Steps of Panchkarma


Vamana – The first step of panchkarma is done using emetics, the substances that make you eliminate the Kapha causing the excess Mucus (therapeutic vomiting). Strong teas consisting of licorice and salt are used for this purpose.

Virechan – In virechan, natural laxatives are used to cleanse the intestinal tract off old waste products that are stuck in your body.

Basti – The third step involves the head, face and chest; these are massaged with oil. Medicated with ayurvedic herbs, the step serves to further cleanse the toxins from your digestive system.

Nasya – Nasya is the cleaning of the nose and the sinuses. A medicinal oil or herbal tea is taken through the nose to cleanse and stimulate the nasal cavities.

Asthapana Vasti (Niruha Vasti) – The step involves the introduction of herbal decoctions in the rectum.The combination of mind-body healing techniques cleanse toxins from the body and clear the blockage in channels. This ascertains proper movement of vata (one of the foremost reasons behind joint pains), thereby bringing the patient’s condition back to normal.
